About Us The City of Lawrence Utilities operates and maintains three water treatment facilities, five water storage facilities, 25 sewer pumping stations and several support facilities. We also service and maintain over 2000 fire hydrants, 4000 water main valves and 4000 manholes together with more than 150 miles of water mains and over 140 miles of sewer mains. Our service area covers the City of Lawrence, which is approximately 21 square miles and located in the northeastern part of Marion County, Indiana.
Water is supplied by deep wells and is treated to remove iron and manganese. Chlorine is used as a disinfectant and fluoride is added to provide protection against tooth decay in children. Phosphates are added to remove iron from the water mains. Twice each year (Spring and Fall) the entire water main system is flushed to maintain water quality.
The 25 lift stations in the sewer collection grid effectively divide the City into 25 sewage 'basins'. These lift stations then convey the sewage to large interceptor mains where the sewage is transported to the City of Indianapolis Sewage Treatment Plant at Southport.
The City of Lawrence Utilities has a highly motivated and dedicated staff to serve the needs of our customers. Eleven of our operations personnel hold certification from the State of Indiana to operate water treatment facilities and/or water distribution systems. Two operators hold certifications for wastewater treatment. Many of our employees are attending continuing education programs. There is over 100 years worth of combined employee experience working to make sure that the water and sewer systems function effectively and reliably. This is a particularly difficult task given the age and condition of the water and sewer systems in the older parts of the City.
Many of our city employees also serve their community through volunteering with local service organizations such as the Lions Clubs and coaching youth sports and other such activities.
