Welcome to the City of Lawrence Department of Public Works website. The department has a staff of 35 who work to ensure the City’s codes are followed to provide for the safety of our citizens, make sure proper building practices are followed and protect our natural resources.
Public Works has responsibility for city streets, sanitation and building codes and permits.
Our duties include:
- Issuing permits for all construction projects in Lawrence, including commercial, industrial and residential
- Inspecting construction sites from beginning to completion
- Maintaining city streets to ensure they are safe and passable; which includes snow plowing, drainage, maintenance of vegetation on public right-of-way, maintaining street signs, and road repair, trash and recycling collection.
