Lawrence Utilities 2022 Proposed Budget: Investing in Lawrence

Scott Salsbery, Superintendent of Lawrence Utilities, presented the 2022 Water and Sanitary Sewer Utility proposed budgets to the Utility Service Board. These budgets will serve to continue the upward trajectory of operational and capital improvements we have been on since 2017. With the 2022 budget, we will have reinvested over $34 million back into the utility over the past six years! The 2022 budget proposal includes $4 million for improvements to the water system – e.g. water main replacements, meter pit installations, and hydrant and valve replacements. The proposed Salary Ordinance for 2022 contains significant adjustments to pay levels across the utility operations. We must do a better job of attracting and retaining high quality, reliable and motivated staff. We have not adjusted sewer rates since 2009, but annual sewage treatment costs are increasing and the routine operations and maintenance budget is inadequate. We need to preserve the future of our utilities by addressing the rate structure of our sewer utility in 2022.
