Utility announces revised Spring Flushing Notics

March 29, 2017

AREA AFFECTED: From Post Road extending west to Lawrence city limits.

Due to increasing water quality complaints (discolored water) in this area of the water distribution system, Lawrence Utilities is moving the date for the annual spring water main flushing to Sunday, April 9, 2017 through Thursday, April 13, 2017 during the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. This activity is necessary in order to provide the citizens of Lawrence the best water quality possible while we continue to seek funding to allow for annual water main replacements that are designed to replace these old and deteriorated water mains, thereby improving water quality. We will begin flushing water mains east of Post Road during normal business hours from Monday, April 24 through Friday, May 19, 2017 as previously notified.

As a result of this activity, some customers may experience a temporary discoloration of their water and/or a low water pressure condition. Color can range from a light yellow to an orange-red. If this occurs, the customer should run a medium stream of cold water until the water clears. If a customer is experiencing this problem, the customer should not run hot water or wash clothes until the water clears up. The City does not reimburse customers for water used to flush their service lines due to iron discoloration. Main flushing is necessary in order to properly maintain the water distribution system and helps to improve water quality and maintain adequate disinfectant levels per regulatory requirements.
