LAWRENCE FIRST CITY IN INDIANA TO USE INTERPRETATION DEVICE
Lawrence public safety officials are now using mobile interpretation devices to communicate with residents who speak a language other than English. With the push of a button, RTT Mobile Interpretation's ELSA black box devices connect Lawrence police officers and fire fighters with interpreters speaking a 180 different languages.

"Lawrence is a growing and diverse city of more than 46,000 residents, " said Mayor Dean Jessup. "The 2010 Census found that 11.5% of our residents speak a language other than English at home. It's critical for our emergency responders to successfully communicate with all members of our community. A call for help in any language will be answered in Lawrence."

"Lawrence police officers can now speak with every resident of the city without concern for a language barrier," explained Police Chief Mike Walton. "We are using the devices to do community policing and to conduct investigations that may have been delayed in the past until a translator could be of assistance. Now officers can have conversations interpreted immediately and they are recorded for later review."

Chief Walton purchased 24 interpretation devices for public safety personnel using a grant. Each one of Lawrence Fire Department's ambulances now has a device for first responders to use.

"The fire department utilized these devices at an apartment fire last week," stated Fire Chief Mark Delong. "The complex has a number of Spanish speaking residents and our fire fighters were able to communicate with them about injuries and next steps without delay."
