Republic Services Inc. is the city's contracted partner to provide trash collection and recycling. Homeowners should place your city-provided, 96-gallon trash toter cart at the curb, after 6 p.m. on the evening before or no later than 6 a.m. on your scheduled trash collection day.

All trash must be bagged, securely fastened, and placed inside the toter cart with the lid fully closed. Standard household garbage, including food waste and cloth, shrubbery cuttings and broken-down boxes, will be collected as long as all items are contained inside your cart.

Items that do not fit in your cart and additional bags or items must bear an overage tag, which may be purchased for $2 each (cash, check or money order) from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Lawrence Department of Public Works, 9001 E. 59th St., Suite 205.

These items will not be collected:

  • Demolition, construction or discarded building materials, such as drywall, roofing, brick and wood
  • Trees, large tree limbs or tree stumps longer than four feet (limbs will be taken if they are cut shorter than four feet and bundled)
  • Brush or vegetation from building contractors, commercial tree trimmers or lawn services
  • Sod, fill dirt or and trash from contractor clearing and other materials that require special handling
  • Explosives, pathological and biological waste, radioactive material, ashes and sand
  • Automotive parts such as engines, rear ends, springs, fenders and seats
  • Farm equipment, marine vessels or any other major parts
  • Septic, human or and animal waste, except for minimal amounts, such as diapers and kitty litter.

Toter carts are city property and should be left at the residence if you move.

HEAVY TRASH COLLECTION

Each property may set out one heavy or bulky item on the first pickup day of the month. If you have additional heavy items over and above the one allowed each month, you must call Republic at least 48 hours before your pickup day and pay $10 in advance for each item. Heavy or bulky items include furniture, appliances, and bicycles. Please note: Republic will not collect refrigerators, air conditioners or other items containing Freon. CURBSIDE LEAF REMOVAL

Leaves placed in paper lawn bags or in a container clearly marked “yard waste” and placed at the curb will be picked up with your weekly trash. Each property is allowed to dispose of 10 bags each month during April, May, June, September, October and November, only. Additional bags will require an overage tag. The City initiated this agreement in 2014 with Republic Services, Inc.

Leaves may NOT be placed in plastic bags or swept into the street.

Paper bags for lawn refuse and leaves may be purchased for $1.25 plus tax (cash, check or money order) from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Lawrence Department of Public Works, 9001 E. 59th St., Suite 205, or at hardware stores. Overage tags may be purchased from the DPW office at your convenience if you choose to dispose of leaves beyond the six listed months above.

RECYCLING

The city provides 96-gallon toter carts for biweekly, curbside recycling pickup for homeowners. We ask that you recycle these items:

  • Aluminum and metal cans
  • Glass bottles
  • Plastic #1 and #2
  • Plastic bottles with a neck (soda bottles, laundry product containers, etc.)
  • Newspaper and magazines
  • Corrugated cardboard/box board (cereal/soda/beer boxes and similar packaging)

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTES

Leftover household products that contain corrosive, toxic, ignitable or reactive ingredients are considered household hazardous waste. Do not put them in the trash; the city does NOT collect such wastes.

You may drop your hazardous waste products off at the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Training Facility at 9049 E. 10th St. from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the third Saturday of each month.

Do not pour hazardous wastes down the drain, on the ground or into the storm sewer. Such wastes may contaminate septic tanks or wastewater treatment systems or endanger children and pets if left around the house.
