July 14, 2025

Lawrence Mayor Deb Whitfield said this afternoon that the city mourns the loss of one of its past Mayors, former Mayor Robert Sterrett who served the City as Mayor, 1984 to 1987 who passed away this morning. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to Mayor Bob’s family” Mayor Whitfield said.
Mayor Whitfield noted that The Sterrett Center in Lawrence is named in honor of the former Mayor. The Sterrett Center is an historic site and is now home to the Heartland Film Festival.
“He brought professional, measured leadership during a time of continued suburban growth”, Whitfield continued. “His work contributed to our city’s long-term stability and demonstrated a commitment to public service through thoughtful governance and support for neighborhood development,” said Whitfield.
