Summary

Streets laborer is responsible for providing general labor maintenance skills associated with repair and maintenance of City roads, right-of-ways, and infrastructure within the City of Lawrence -Street Department. 

 

Essential Job Functions

  • Maintenance and repair of City roads and easements.
  • Cutting streets for repair work, milling streets for paving and drainage, compacting roadways.
  • Paving roads, patching holes, locating pipe, installing and repairing pipe, filling road cracks.
  • Removing damaged sidewalks and curbs, grinding asphalt and concrete, pouring concrete, forming sidewalks and curbs.
  • Maintaining storm sewers, repairing or building storm inlets, replacing or repairing berm work.
  • Maintaining and removing trees, cutting tree limbs or bushes, mowing easements, planting grass, repairing street lights. 
  • Painting street markings, installing or replacing road signs, clearing ditches, sweeping streets, spreading road materials.
  • Picking up trash or debris, placing safety barricades and cones and flagging traffic.
  • Operate machinery, hold, or supply materials and tools, and load or unload items on/off machinery or vehicles.
  • Cares for property by cutting grass, repairing yard, pulling, and discarding weeds, or shoveling and removing snow.
  • Responsible for all personal safety and other equipment and tools issued by the City to perform assigned tasks; shall ensure equipment and tools are in good working order, operate safely and all supplies and tools necessary to perform assigned tasks are available and in proper and safe working condition.
  • May be tasked with customer service-related issues with citizens of the City of Lawrence.
  • Polite and courteous behavior is always expected.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Excellent ability to listen and understand information and ideas presented verbally and in writing. Ability to handle a variety of issues with tact and diplomacy and in a confidential manner.

  • Coordination of Work – Ability to plan and organize daily work routine and establish priorities for the completion of work in accordance with sound time-management.

Physical Requirements / Work Environment

  • Frequent and/or prolonged periods standing and walking. 

  • Occasionally sits, climbs, or balances, descends, and ascends ladders into trenches and manholes; stoops, kneels, crouches.

  • Communication: verbal and written 

  • Visibliity: ear, distant, color, peripheral vision, depth perception and an ability to adjust focus are required.

  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds at times.

  • Manual operation with a variety of machinery, tools, and equipment.

  • Must be able to work inside and outside with various weather condition and tolerate noise and smells.

Education and Experience

  • Previous experience working in public works with streets, preferred.

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

  • Must have some basic computer skills.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Indiana driver’s license.

  • Class B Indiana Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), preferred.

Additional Requirements

 

Requires a background investigation to include a local, state, and federal criminal history check, sex offender registry, consumer report. Requires satisfactory results from pre-employment drug screening.
