Summary

The City of Lawrence is seeking a high-energy, detail-oriented Summer Events Intern to help bring our community celebrations to life. The Events Intern will work behind the scenes and on the front lines of Lawrence’s most popular summer traditions, gaining hands-on experience in large-scale event production, municipal operations, and community engagement.  

This seasonal role requires 15–25 hours per week. Responsibilities include supporting outdoor events during evenings, weekends, and other non-traditional hours, as well as performing administrative duties during regular business hours.

 

Essential Job Functions

  • Event Execution: Assist with the setup, "live-event" management, and teardown of city festivals, concerts, and farmers markets.
  • Administrative Support: Help process vendor applications, manage event calendars, and organize supply inventories.
  • Vendor Relations: Serve as a point of contact for food trucks, artisans, and performers to ensure smooth on-site operations.
  • Guest Services: Greet residents, answer questions, and ensure a safe, welcoming environment for all event attendees.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Age Requirement: Must be 18 years of age or older by the start date.
  • Schedule Flexibility: Must be willing and able to work non-traditional hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays (e.g., Independence Day celebrations).
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written skills; comfortable talking to diverse groups of people.
  • Problem Solving: A "can-do" attitude and the ability to think on your feet in a fast-paced environment.

Physical Requirements / Work Environment

  • Work outdoors in summer weather.
  • Lift/move up to 30 lbs (tents, tables, signage).

 

Education and Experience

Currently enrolled in (or a recent graduate of) a program related to Event Management, Public Relations, Sports Marketing, or Public Administration.
