“I am half White, half Mexican and it’s a strange dichotomy to be in that position.”
September 26, 2022

Daniel G.
"The family structure is a lot different. I am half white, half Mexican, and it’s a strange dichotomy to be in that position because the cultures are different. Sure, there are some similarities, but overall, the differences are big.
I really like how (a Hispanic) family is very tight and the community is more of a requirement and integral to life. It just seems like there is more togetherness. I don’t know how to explain it, but I really like that. I grew up in a tiny town with two thousand people, and I was the minority, but I looked white. You know I would hear jokes – racial jokes of all different races, and I could easily get mad and be negative about it. But when you talk to people, normally, I think they understand better how something can be offensive or not offensive.
I didn’t grow up in a huge Latino environment, just with my family. Most of my family is in Mexico right now. I did a lot of minority camps growing up. I would go down to Mexico in the summertime and the winter. It was just a completely different feeling."
