LAWRENCE SELECTED AGAIN FOR ENVIRONMENTAL FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
City to Benefit from Environmental Initiative in 2027

Lawrence, IN – Mayor Deb Whitfield announced today that the City of Lawrence has been selected to participate in the 2027 Urban Green Infrastructure (UGI) program through Indiana University’s Environmental Resilience Institute (ERI).

“This will essentially build upon the work of our current McKinney Fellow and our anticipated Urban Forestry Master Plan later this fall,” Whitfield said.

  • Under the UGI program, the City of Lawrence will benefit from:
  • A completed canopy cover analysis to help identify priority areas for tree planting.
  • A Tree Canopy Summary Report and planting plan.
  • 100 additional trees.
  • A full-time, in-person McKinney Fellow during the summer of 2027, who will continue working remotely on a part-time basis in the fall leading up to the tree plantings, similar to the City’s current UGG Fellow.

“Our experience with this fellowship and our relationship with IU’s ERI program has been outstanding. This program has been a real success for Lawrence!” Mayor Whitfield said.
