Former Indiana Mayors Share Insights
March 20, 2025

A meeting of the minds!
Yesterday, Mayor Deb Whitfield welcomed three former Indiana mayors for a conversation on leadership, city governance, and shaping Lawrence’s future. With decades of experience in the room, they shared insights on challenges, opportunities, and the power of collaboration.
Two of these leaders are now key members of Mayor Whitfield’s team:
- Greg Goodnight (Kokomo Mayor, 2008–2019) – Chief of Staff
- Jim Perron (Elkhart Mayor, 1984–1999) – Director of Communications for Fund Development
Joining them was James Brainard, who served as the fifth mayor of Carmel from 1996 to 2024. As one of Indiana’s longest-serving mayors, he led Carmel’s transformation through urban planning, sustainability, and economic development—growing the city from 25,000 to over 100,000 residents.
Though from different cities and political backgrounds, their shared passion for strong communities transcends politics. Mayor Whitfield values their wisdom as she works to ensure Lawrence thrives!
