Live Longer in Lawrence: A Commitment to Community Health

The City of Lawrence has launched Live Longer in Lawrence, a health initiative aimed at closing the life expectancy gap revealed by a recent IU Indianapolis study. The research found residents in the 46256 zip code live, on average, eight years longer than those in 46226.

"That made me really anxious, because I want our residents to be healthy," said Mayor Deb Whitfield. “Everyone deserves the chance to live a long, healthy life.”

To lead this effort, the City appointed Dr. John Kunzer as its first Chief Medical Officer in partnership with Community Health Network. The initiative focuses on expanding access to care, promoting wellness, and improving neighborhood infrastructure like trails and recreation spaces.

Programs like the Health & Wellness Fair, free screenings, and year-round wellness events are just the beginning.
