CITY OF LAWRENCE NAMED ONE OF THE TOP 12 CITIES
TO WATCH ON ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH
Mayor Deb Whitfield’s Leadership Earns National Recognition
Lawrence, IN – The City of Lawrence and Mayor Deb Whitfield have been recognized by the Community Data Health Initiative as one of the “Top 12 African American Mayors Association (AAMA) Cities to Watch on Environmental Health.”
This national recognition highlights Mayor Whitfield’s leadership in advancing environmental health through Live Longer in Lawrence—a citywide initiative focused on improving health outcomes and addressing disparities in life expectancy across neighborhoods.
As part of these efforts, the City of Lawrence has taken proactive steps to protect residents from the growing risks of extreme heat. In partnership with the Indianapolis Public Library, the Fort Ben Branch has been designated as an official cooling site during National Weather Service heat advisories. The City is also working to expand access to additional cooling locations, with a focus on supporting seniors and residents with chronic health conditions.
Through strategic use of data, community partnerships, and practical interventions, Live Longer in Lawrence is positioning the city as a model for how local governments can address environmental health challenges and close life expectancy gaps.
“Our efforts will continue in earnest,” said Mayor Whitfield. “We are honored to receive national recognition and remain committed to building a healthier, more equitable Lawrence for all residents.”
