LAWRENCE RECOGNIZED FOR ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP
AS A CLEAN COMMUNITY
Recognition heightens awareness of ‘Live Longer in Lawrence’ initiative
Lawrence, IN – The City of Lawrence has been recognized by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) as Indiana’s newest Clean Community, honoring the city’s commitment to environmental stewardship, sustainability, and quality of life for residents.
Established by IDEM in the early 2000s, the Clean Community Program (formerly known as the Clean Community Challenge) recognizes Indiana counties, cities, and towns that take a proactive approach to improving communities through sustainable environmental and wellness initiatives. The program highlights municipalities that work to create healthier neighborhoods, stronger local economies, and a cleaner future for all Hoosiers.
In a letter to Lawrence Mayor Deb Whitfield, IDEM Commissioner Clint Woods praised the city’s achievement, stating “By being an Indiana Clean Community Program member, the City of Lawrence is distinguished as one of a select group of cities, towns, and counties across Indiana willing to go above and beyond environmental requirements by implementing voluntary projects, committing to continuous improvement, and meeting stringent requirements for membership. This commitment also moves Indiana toward a balanced future of economic success and a cleaner Indiana for all Hoosiers.”
Communities participating in the Clean Community Program can advance through three levels of recognition: Bronze, Silver, and Gold. All new members begin at the Bronze level.
“We are thrilled that we are joining communities throughout our state in addressing the environmental needs of those who call Indiana home,” said Mayor Deb Whitfield. “As we expand our Live Longer in Lawrence initiative, plans are underway to create the city’s Clean Team, comprised of local stakeholders who will identify and develop sustainability projects that will allow our city to progress to the Silver level.”
Lawrence becomes the 20th Indiana community to receive the Clean Community designation.
Other Indiana Clean Communities include Beech Grove, Brown County, Evansville, Fishers, Hobart, Richmond, Shelbyville, Zionsville, Bloomington, Fortville, Greencastle, Kokomo, Lafayette, Merrillville, New Castle, New Chicago, Porter, Westfield, and Whitestown.
