WHITFIELD UNVEILS PROPOSED 2027 LAWRENCE BUDGET WITH PROJECTED $1.3 MILLION SURPLUS
Sound fiscal management positions city to navigate state tax constraints and SEA 1
 
LAWRENCE — Mayor Deb Whitfield presented Lawrence’s proposed 2027 budget to the Lawrence Common Council last evening, outlining a spending plan that projects a $1.3 million surplus while maintaining city services and providing 3% salary increases for all positions.

The proposed budget reflects the administration’s focus on fiscal discipline amid the financial challenges created by SEA 1 and ongoing property tax constraints facing municipalities across Indiana.
 
“Our number one priority is sound fiscal management,” Mayor Whitfield said. “This budget reflects our commitment to being responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars while continuing to invest in our employees and the services Lawrence residents depend on.”
 
The proposed 2027 budget marks a notable shift from the city’s projected 2026 financial position. While Lawrence is currently projecting a deficit for 2026, the proposed 2027 budget anticipates increased revenues and lower expenditures, resulting in a projected $1.3 million surplus.

The Lawrence Common Council Finance Committee is scheduled to begin its review of the proposed budget on October 5. A public hearing is scheduled for October 15, with budget adoption and consideration of salary ordinances expected by October 21.
