A note about road closures.

We know there has been a lot of frustration with the number of road closures and construction projects affecting travel around the City of Lawrence, particularly the 75th Street and Oaklandon Road roundabout project and the recent CSX railroad crossing closures. We wanted to take a moment to provide some additional information regarding the overlapping closures and the City’s efforts to minimize their impact on the public.

We also recognize that the railroad closures may create additional transportation challenges for motorists, particularly because an existing detour is already in place due to the construction of the 75th Street and Oaklandon Road roundabout. However, the City does not control CSX's construction schedule, work activities, or the timing of the railroad crossing closures.

When the City was made aware of CSX’s scheduled Sunnyside Road railroad crossing closure, we immediately requested that CSX consider adjusting the timing of the closure to minimize the impact of the overlapping road closures on motorists and the community. CSX indicated that it was unable to adjust its schedule, and the railroad crossing closure will therefore proceed as currently scheduled.

Again, the City recognizes the inconvenience caused by these overlapping closures and is working diligently to share information with the public as it becomes available. We encourage motorists to plan ahead, allow additional travel time, and consider alternate routes when possible.

•Franklin Road: Closed through Sept. 26
• 47th Street: Closed through Sept. 26
• Sunnyside Road: Closed Oct. 5–10
