I define my culture as a blend of my black traditions and US traditions

"It is important to celebrate Black History, but it is more important to acknowledge the past and present contributions of Black men and women to the United States of America as we do with others. It is significant that we do not lose the ‘true’ historical context of how Black men and women have earned the rights and privileges as citizens in this country to continue the efforts to make sure we do not revert back to the past but move forward to a better nation.

What is the best part of your culture? Well, it is how you define the word, culture. It can mean many things to individuals.  It is difficult to specifically define my culture because it is a blend of where my great-great grandparents traveled from to integrate in the United States dominant culture. It is a journey as an adult I am starting to take to know my identity roots that placed me in this country.  I select to define my culture as a blend of my black traditions and US traditions. Such as holidays, a spiritual relationship with God, food, style of dress, music and hairstyles are the best thing about culture to me.

My greatest accomplishment is being a Black woman in a country that provides me the opportunities to reach my best potential as God determines for me.  As a first-generation college graduate, who has earned a bachelors, two masters and PhD are all great accomplishments in life. The greatest accomplishments as a Black American woman is staying committed to marriage and raising children who can contribute to society for the betterment of all mankind.

The words of advice I can give Black/African Americans is to get involved at your local and state political level.  You need to stay informed when the Indiana Assembly State is in session and local county meetings. In order to improve your economic wealth, invest in your education and skill sets. This means take advantage of apprentice programs, 2-year certification or degrees, 4-year degrees, or the armed forces."  - Dr. Cassandra Shipp
