Kiwanis host breakfast and raise funds
June 6, 2017
Lawrence Kiwanis President Chris Barnthouse led the Pledge of Allegiance at the 2017 Kiwanis Prayer Breakfast May 16 in front of a unique flag at the Sterrett Center. Barnthouse explained the flag had been created during World War II in Belgium as the Americans were on their way to liberate the region near Bastogne. It had been held captive by the Nazi regime for four years. Barnthouse said the flag, which features 48 stars, was presented to US Army officials as they arrived. The flag has been handed down two generations and will eventually be donated to a museum.
The event recognized the youth who will particiate in Lawrence United Methodist Church's Youth Corps this summer and featured Attorney Deidra Haynes as the keynote speaker. Haynes shared her story of determination and redemption in challenging circumstances. Pastor Mike VandenBerg, Pastor Drayton Travis, Pastor Joe Johnston, and Chaplain Mel Keaton offered prayers during the gathering.
