LPD announces July 11 groundbreaking for new station

A ceremonial groundbreaking will take place at the new home of the Lawrence Police Department Wednesday, July 11, at 10 a.m. The property of the new headquarters, located at 5150 N. Post Road, is just south of the railroad tracks on Post Road.

Mayor Steve Collier and LPD Chief David Hofmann are scheduled to speak about project details and Deputy Chief Gary Woodruff will be the Master of Ceremonies. Woodruff saidChaplain Mel Keaton will bless the ground of the construction site before dignitaries turn the ceremonial soil.

The $12.9 million project will include a nearly 37,000 square-foot two-story police station with a fully-equipped basement, a sally port for the safe transfer and process of arrestees, a 2000-square-foot detached police vehicle storage space with a vehicle processing garage, and roughly 150-spaces for parking.

Hofmann said the facility will accommodate LPD’s public safety officers and he hopes its meeting spaces will also be available for community meetings.
